The Madison River

The Madison River near Ennis, MT

The Madison River flows North from Yellowstone National Park where it joins the Gallatin and Jefferson Rivers to form the headwaters of the Missouri River. The Upper Madison River is known as the 50 mile riffle due to its shallow and fast flowing currents. The river flows through the beautiful Madison valley with majestic high mountain scenery in every direction. With its many large boulders and its continuous riffle, the Madison River is perfect for the dry fly and the streamer fisherman alike. There are many opportunities for wade fishing, although we predominately fish from a drift boat. There are many Rainbow and Brown Trout throughout the river with an average trout ranging between 14”-18”. There are plenty of large, above 20”, rainbow and brown trout caught during all seasons on the Madison River.

Beginning in late June to early July, as the runoff slows down, the river really begins to get hot. The Madison is very unique because it can be fished in many different ways successfully while offering the trout of a lifetime! The Madison River can fish very well with both wet and dry flies through the summer and well into October. Join Braden Powell or one of our great madison river fly fishing guides for an incredible Montana fly fishing trip.  We offer Full Day floats, Half Day floats and walk-wade trips daily. Please see our rates page for more information.

The Jefferson River

Jefferson River, Montana

Formed by the Big Hole and Beaverhead rivers, The Jefferson is a large, slow moving river that can offer a terrific trout fishing experience. The fish populations per mile are not as high here as many other rivers in South Western Montana, but when the river flows and temperatures agree, The Jeff can fish very, very well. Lewis and Clark traveled this river and named it such after Thomas Jefferson. Flowing through beautiful ranch land and the famed Lewis and Clark Caverns, the river has scenic beauty and historical significance, which together make for an unforgettable day on the river. Join our Ennis, Montana fly fishing guides for your next trip!

The Yellowstone River

Yellowstone River, Montana

As the longest freestone river in the lower 48, The Yellowstone is truly a “wild and scenic” river. Our Ennis, Montana fly fishing guides enjoy fishing anywhere from Yankee Jim Canyon through Paradise Valley and from the town of Livingston to the town of Big Timber. The upper portions of the river have higher trout populations than the lower river and also contain large numbers of The Yellowstone Cutthroat. This stretch flows through Paradise Valley, with majestic mountains on both sides of the river. As the Yellowstone flows through the valley and into the town of Livingston, the populations of trout begin to decrease in numbers but increase in size.

Due to the wildness of the river, runoff can sometimes last well into the summer months, so please contact us for water flows and conditions before scheduling your fishing trip with us. We prefer to float the Yellowstone from our drift boat while also taking advantage of the large gravel bars for wade fishing. From Ennis, the drive is roughly 1.5 hours to the Yellowstone. If you like to cast large dry flies for beautiful native cutthroat or strip streamers for massive brown trout please contact us today. You will find all other pertinent information for a full day Montana fly fishing trip on our rates page.
